My Story

Raised in Red Hook Houses and Bushwick, Brooklyn, Ericka Tapia Hunter’s story is not simply one of overcoming. It is one of building. A former teen mother who came of age in public housing, she learned early that poverty can restrict access, but it does not have to restrict vision. The same community that witnessed her early challenges also modeled collective care, ingenuity, and shared responsibility. Those lessons shaped her leadership philosophy long before she ever held a formal title.

At 21, she donated a kidney to her mother during a transplant journey that exposed her to the complex realities of healthcare inequities, ageism, sexism, and systemic racism. Navigating institutions as a young Black Puerto Rican woman sharpened her understanding of how systems can either empower or exclude. That experience, combined with the discipline required to raise a child while still growing into adulthood herself, became the foundation of her commitment to structural change. She does not speak about equity from theory alone - she speaks from lived navigation, informed by advanced scholarship and strategic execution.

Ericka is a multifaceted builder. A serial entrepreneur. A multi-homeowner. A brand architect. A creator of opportunity. She has founded and co-founded ventures rooted in growth, ownership, and wellness. Yet, after achieving milestones many aspire to, she deliberately chose to return to school. Not to accumulate credentials for prestige, but to ensure her influence was fortified with evidence, research, and institutional authority. She understood that lived experience opens doors, but scholarship sustains them. She chose to stand at the intersection of both.

Today, Ericka is a Doctor of Social Work and a natural, transformative leader who partners with individuals, executive teams, boards, schools, and organizations ready to move beyond surface-level change. She helps leaders translate culture into competitive advantage, lived experience into strategic insight, and vision into measurable outcomes. Her work centers on equity-driven and restorative frameworks, including the CIRCLE Model she developed, to build people-centered systems that increase engagement, accountability, wellness, and performance. She is frequently invited to speak to boards, funders, donors, and leadership teams, articulating complex challenges with clarity and precision. Her ability to bridge storytelling and strategy allows stakeholders to see not only what the work is, but why it matters and how it drives sustainable results.

Beyond her professional leadership, Ericka is an entrepreneur, an author-in-progress, a holistic wellness advocate, and a devoted mother of two daughters. She grows her own food, crafts artisan soap and body products, and models the integration she teaches. For her, leadership is not abstract; it is practiced daily in how we build, heal, and invest in one another.

Ericka holds a Doctor of Social Work from the University of Kentucky, a Master of Social Work from Fordham University, and is a Licensed Master Social Worker in New York State.
